How to Convert GIS_Area to physical measurement?

Question
RorG asked on November 12, 2016, keyword: Viewer / Editor
Is there a reference to converting the GIS_Area field to a physical measurement, such as meters squared?

If it depends on coordinate system, the shapefile in question is NAD83 HARN.

Function shape.GetFiles( 'GIS_AREA' ) always provide meters if only project has a proper coordinate system set.

Function shape.AreaCS()  also returns value in meters while shape.Area() provide value in map units (or layer units if shape.Lock( gisLockProjection ) is in use.
